František Matula was born in 1953 in Kyjov. He is a member of the Association of Painters of Podblanicka in Vlašim. In his work he was delighted by his meeting with folk painter Jiřina Spurna and friendship with painters Josef Krejčiřík, Jan Soukup, Karl Valtre, Bedřich Budil and Zbyšek Sion. Another great contribution to František Matula and his work was the lifelong friendship formed in the 1980s with the poet Louis Kundera. The work of František Matula is carried in two intertwining lines. On the one hand, it is lyrical abstraction and on the other hand it is landscape painting with elements of animism and fantasy. The landscape is often depicted in hints with striking color tones that give it a dreamy touch. His themes often have several pictorial variations, as proof of the search for the best expression. In recent years, František Matula also deals with themes from the surroundings of his residence — the Želivka water reservoir, which evokes him to return to a kind of prakrajina. His paintings are also inspired by stories from poems and literary works by, for example, Jakub Deml, Ludvík Kundera and R. M. Rilke and others. The most common technique of František Matula is acrylic on hardboard, canvas and wood.
